Overall Park Score

This was just a quick overnight stay for us, so we didn’t have too much time to soak in the experience. But what we did experience was certainly fine for a night’s stay. Some sites appeared unleveled, but ours was fine. Also, if you want to access the cable TV, you need to ask the office for a cable box. We didn’t know that until after the office had closed for the day, so it would have been good if the office staff had advised us of this during check-in.

There aren’t many tourist destinations right there by the park, but your options open up greatly if you’re open to “an hour or so away” drives.

Maker’s Mark Distillery – 33 miles east in Loretto

Churchill Downs – 40 miles north in Louisville

Louisville Zoological Garden – 40 miles north in Louisville

Mammoth Cave National Park – 48 miles south in Mammoth Cave

National Corvette Museum – 68 miles south in Bowling Green

Closer by are:

Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum – just 5 miles – FREE admission – open 10 to 5, Monday through Saturday

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace – 17 miles – FREE admission – A part of the National Park Service. There is an alert on their web site stating: The Boyhood Home Unit at Knob Creek is closed due to construction at the site. Whereas the site is a construction zone there are public safety concerns. Construction is due to be completed in the latter part of 2015. Birthplace Unit is open.
