Staying at Henderson Beach State Park (Destin, FL)

Henderson Beach State Park — I could have stayed here for months! … or forever.

This Florida state park is perfect for a “camper” like me who wants to stay in a quiet, nature-rich environment while also having the convenience of shops and restaurants nearby. Oh! – and a gorgeous, white sand, walkable beach, which was a quick, easy quarter of a mile stroll away from my campsite.

I was in our camper van, which unlike our motor coach, means I like to use the campgrounds’ showers as long as they are not too, too gross. Here at Henderson, the showers here were kept very clean, though are a bit dated. However, I am not complaining because each Loop had its own shower house and 2 showers that were private with their own bathroom. I love this arrangement at campgrounds, don’t you?

Shops and restaurants are close by – a mile or two away. But within 10 miles, fine dining and “fancy” shopping are at your feet. Perfection!

Though I personally didn’t do any fine dining or fancy shopping during this visit to Henderson, I loved knowing they were there. What I did do was spend plenty of time at the beautiful gulf beach, which was a short, pleasant walk from my site. If you’re an RV’er and looking for a beach vacation, come here! You won’t be disappointed!! The sand near the shoreline is perfect “beach walking” sand, nice and firm to keep your steps from sinking. (No dogs allowed on this beach.)

Each site feels sufficiently spacious and private since you are snuggled in a “cove” of vegetation, and you have your own picnic table, grill, and clothesline. While there is no sewer at the sites, there is 30/50 amp and water at each. (There is a dump station near the entrance/exit.)

Something to note regarding making your reservation: You need to contact Reserve America (online or via phone), to make your reservation, and do not trust the floridastateparks.org website regarding availability for any of the Florida state parks. These state parks are very popular and you may have to check quite a few parks before finding one you can get in to, unless of course you’re the type of RV’er who plans way ahead of time. I’m … uh … not that put together!
